Ask a Pro - What does “Aging in Place” mean?

“Aging in place” is a term used to describe seniors who prefer staying in their own homes rather than moving into a retirement community to receive care they may need.

For those that decide to stay in their homes relying on friends, family and professional services to assist them with their daily needs, may need more and more help as each day passes. Safety may become an issue; stairs may become an obstacle to conquer each day. Daily chores that once would take a few minutes are now lengthy tasks. Possibly a spouse recently passed away and the need for socialization or downsizing is sought after.

Independent Living or Personal Care – which is right for me?

Many seniors live alone or with their spouse in the home they purchased decades ago. As time goes by they either realize they do not want the responsibility of taking care of a home or, unfortunately, their health begins to decline.

When to Move our Loved One into a Memory Care Facility

Caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or a dementia-related illness is a challenging task. Many times as the disease advances the needs of the person become so great it is very difficult to provide care at home.

Many people who suffer from dementia do not sleep well. They often wander and cannot remember how to get back home. They lose the ability to assess dangerous situations. All of these aspects of the behavior of a person with dementia can make caring for them at home exhausting, demanding and frustrating.

When is the Right Time to Move into a Senior Living Community?

As we age, one of the most difficult decisions we make is when to leave the home we have lived in for many years, a home where we created wonderful memories with our family.

Decades ago, downsizing wasn’t even a word in our vocabulary, but now, it is something we must consider since keeping up with daily household chores has become more trying each passing day. Climbing the stairs has turned into a challenging feat. Maintaining the yard is no longer an enjoyable task. Relying on the neighbors to clear the snow from the driveway has become routine.
